How To Choose The Right Attachment Method For You

Choosing an attachment method

You have decided you want to go ahead with non- surgical hair replacement, but are confused which method of attachment is suitable for you. We are here to help simplify the process for you. There are three main types of attachment methods to choose from: clip-on, bonding (with tape or glue), or a combination of the two.

We will look at each of these methods in detail.

Clip on

If you have decent amount of growing hair, meaning you are in the early stages of hair loss, a clip-on hair system might be perfect for you.  In a clip-on hair system, there are comb clips sewn around the base.  When you want to attach the hair system, open each comb clip, gather some growing hair inside, and snap the clip to close it.

A clip on system is meant for you if:

  1. You are in the early stages of hair loss.
  2. You want to remove your hair system everyday and attach whenever you want.
  3. You are not so concerned about the system being detectable to touch.
  4. You are very comfortable with the idea of not having hair 24 hours a day.
  5. You don’t want your hair system on when showering or sleeping.
  6. You are not afraid of being seen without your hair system.
  7. You want your hair system to have a longer lifespan.
  8. Your skin is highly sensitive to adhesives or solvents.
  9. You have skin issues and a clip-on system gives breathing space to your scalp overnight.
  10.  You are not very physically active.
  11. You don’t want to shave your head.
  12. You don’t want to use adhesives.

To use a clip-on system you need to have adequate amount of growing hair as the clips need hair to grab onto.  You may be a good candidate for a clip-on system if you just need to add a little bit of volume to your thinning hair but your not ready to shave your head.

Clip- ons are low in maintenance.  They last longer than bonded hair systems and hence don’t need to be replaced that often.  They are also more affordable and don’t require you to use maintenance products that are needed for bonded hair systems.

Bonding

This is a popular method of attaching hair systems, wherein your lace, monofilament or skin hair system is bonded to your scalp with special tape or liquid adhesive.  You are required to shave your head so that an optimal surface is created to bond the system.  Bonded hair systems may increase the pace of your hair loss.  It is advisable that you go ahead only if your hair loss is permanent.

A bonded hair system is meant for you if:

  1. You have very little or no hair.
  2. Your hair loss is permanent.
  3. You don’t mind shaving your hair under the system.
  4. You are ok to make a commitment to bonding
  5. You don’t want the system to be detectable to touch.
  6. You want to have hair on your head 24/7, including when sleeping and showering.
  7. You have an active lifestyle
  8. You have the time to set aside for maintenance.
  9. Your budget permits you to be able to buy more than one hair system a year.
  10. You don’t have scalp issues such as psoriasis or eczema.

Combination

If you have lost hair mainly in the front, but have enough hair on the sides and back to be able to attach clips, but you want to take off your system every evening, you could go for a combination of tape and clips.  The clips will be sewn onto the back and sides of the hair system, and the front hairline area can be taped for a natural look.

The bonded front provides a more secure and natural hairline.  The clips on the side and back, prevent the system from sliding back.

A combination system is meant for you if:

  1. You have lost hair only in the front but have enough hair at the back and sides.
  2. You have front hairline area that is exposed.
  3. You want to be able to remove the system everyday.
  4. You are comfortable with not having hair 24/7
  5. You are not that concerned about the system being detectable to touch.
  6. You don’t want your hair system on during sleep and shower.
  7. You are comfortable being seen without your hair system.
  8. You want your hair system to have a longer lifespan (as you wont be wearing 24/7).
  9. You have skin issues and want to give your scalp breathing space overnight.
  10.  You don’t want to shave the entire scalp area.

Minimal maintenance is required for this method, except for just re-taping the front hairline every day, and clean it every one or two weeks.  These hair systems are longer lasting and affordable compared to a fully bonded hair system.
